The trouble is everything needs a 1-3 word catch-phrase these days. And once created, pop psych ideas are hard to kill. Particularly if the a) give people weapons to promote themselves with or b) excuses for not learning something that was hard work.

I think the term 'digital native' has been used too early or in haste. Young people do use the internet more but the generation that will likely be the real ‘digital natives’ is the ‘iPod Generation’ These individuals are currently in the 12-15yr age gp and have grown up post LP and CD. They use social networking extensively, they get their music from the net and everything else from the net for that matter.

If you want to generalize from a sample, the sample should be representative of the population you are generalizing to. So if you only collect data from people who are already engaged with the technology, you are not likely to get a representative picture of how people in that group are using technology.

It's part of a larger problem with the broader educational technology discourse in my view. Educational technologists sometimes forget there are a lot of people who aren't immersed in the technology and aren't using it in their daily work. There is a bit of an echo chamber effect in which educational technologists talk to other educational technologists to test ideas.

Unfortunately we don't have access to the journal, but I think their choice of title for the theme was a mistake. From the editorial it sounds like they disagree with idea that there is a Net Generation and Digital Natives, but the title gives the opposite impression.

What shocks me is when people who have as much education (and influence) as Arthur Levine actually start saying these things. The whole general acceptance of the digital native argument as truth by people speaks equally to people's willingness to; need to explain the changes that are taking place around them rather desperately and the mental laziness of just accepting things that seem rational rather than challenging assumptions.
